Connecticut man arrested for digging up neighbors' yard because he thought they were pirates

A Connecticut family was recently surprised to find their neighbor digging up their yard one Saturday morning. When they confronted the neighbor, the man began threatening them with the rock rake he was holding.

When the police showed up, the 62-year-old man named Mark Uterstaedt told them that he owned the neighborhood and that he believed the neighbors, whose yard he was digging up, were pirates.

And we all know why you would dig up things pirates have buried in their yards. I honestly couldn't think of a better excuse for digging up your neighbor's yard.

Police reported that,

The caller's husband confronted Uterstaedt about being on his property and digging up his yard. Uterstaedt began to yell and scream obscenities directed at the caller's husband and young children. Uterstaedt then swung his rock rake in the direction of the caller's husband in a threatening manner.

Uterstaedt later told police that he was actually digging up the yard because he believed they were trying to install a water line, which seems much more reasonable, but presumably still illegal.

Uterstaedt is now being charged with risk of injury, second-degree threatening, fourth-degree criminal mischief, breach of peace, and simple trespass as a result of his bizarre outburst.

As far as I know, the neighbors have neither confirmed nor denied their identity as pirates.
