Look, it could happen to anybody, but it's not as if he was asked to recite the Magna Carta or sing "American Pie" acapella.
Incidentally, this is the same Kevin de León who challenged Senator Dianne Feinstein in 2018.
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America….............. undervisible,.... I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America…........... for which it stands. One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all…..... oof."
There's your new pledge, homeschoolers!
I have to admire his incredible confidence in the beginning. "It would be an honor," he intones with his impressive baritone.
Fail big, or don't fail at all, I say.
it turns out de León is no stranger to gaffes. He came to some notoriety while serving in the state legislature when during a presentation he discussed the performance characteristics of a "30-caliber clip." Of course he corrected himself shortly thereafter with "30 magazine clip."
But, credit where it's due. He resisted any urge he might have had to dismiss the whole thing given that the Pledge is of course founded upon nativist white nationalism anyway.
Instead, he took it in stride, apologized, and used the incident as an opportunity to raise money for a charitable group dedicated to helping the people he has sworn an oath to serve: Those in the country illegally.
"Proud to be humans," they say.
For the record, this is the Magna Carta.
This is American Pie
And this, this is the Pledge of Allegiance.
