Not exactly sure what these folks thought would happen when they just up-and-decided to admit men to a women's college. But I'm betting it wasn't this:

Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana, is backtracking on its decision to allow men who identify as transgender women to enroll in the formerly all-female, Catholic institution.

...

"This has weighed heavily on our minds and in our hearts," [President Katie Conboy] said in the email, sent around 11 a.m. on Thursday. "There have been many voices responding to us from many places and perspectives. We have listened closely, and we have heard each of you."

The school had previously announced the decision to admit not just women but any students who "consistently live and identify as women."

That's code word for "men who believe themselves to be women."

It's worth stressing that this wasn't just a matter of making the school co-educational; if that had been the case, probably few people would have objected.

Rather, the school said it would begin admitting mentally ill men who believe they are women. That's a whole 'nother ball game, and not one that the Saint Mary's community was prepared to accept.

Fort Wayne-South Bend Bishop Kevin Rhoades had earlier spoken out strongly against the policy:

To call itself a ‘women's college' and to admit male students who ‘consistently live and identify as women' suggests that the college affirms an ideology of gender that separates sex from gender and claims that sexual identity is based on the subjective experience of the individual. ... This ideology is at odds with Catholic teaching."

The school said it will host "listening sessions" next month in order to determine "how a college like ours can become a true home, a place of open doors and open arms, where everyone, with all their differences intact, belongs."

Uh huh. Okay.
