Dell is laying off more than 12,000 workers as it moves to embrace AI

There was a time when Dell was ubiquitous amid the viciously competitive computer market and this guy was on everybody's television 24/7:

Alas, it looks like those days could be coming to an end:

Dell Technologies is cutting some sales jobs and adding others, as it reorganizes its business for the AI era, to become 'leaner' and focused on growth.

'Through a reorganization of our go-to-market teams and an ongoing series of actions, we are becoming a leaner company,' the company said in a statement released Monday afternoon. 'We are combining teams and prioritizing where we invest across the company. We continually evolve our business, so we're set up to deliver the best innovation, value and service to our customers and partners.'

Reports indicate that the company could lay off upwards of 12,500 workers.

AI continues to have one message for human workers at legacy institutions:

To be sure, plenty of flesh-and-blood workers will remain. You can't run a company without at least some human input.

But it's clear that AI is increasingly going to be taking over roles and jobs that once needed to be done by individual human beings. I mean, we've got AI writing Dave Matthews songs at this point:

So if I were at a legacy tech institution I'd probably be sweating a little bit right now, especially since these cuts aren't a one-time thing:

Former Dell employee Ian Armstrong, who previously worked on the company's UX design team for eight years, called the layoffs a 'bloodbath' in a post, reporting that Dell has now laid off 24,500 staff in the past 15 months. Dell previously laid off 13,000 employees in the past fiscal year, with about half of those cuts occurring in February last year.

Tough times ahead, techies!
