Another "L" for woke Disney!
In 2023 the perennial powerhouse of a mouse was surpassed by their rival, Universal Studios, at the box office, earning only $4.827 billion compared to Universal's $4.907 billion in global ticket sales.
The non-woke Super Mario Brothers movie, along with Christopher Nolan's epic Oppenheimer, helped to push Universal past Disney as they continue to suffer from woke backlash.
Woke Little Mermaid, new superhero movies no one wants, and weird Pixar movies aren't a winning recipe for Disney.
I'm not really participating in a Disney boycott, but I can honestly say this is probably the first year where I didn't watch ANY new Disney movies. Nothing looked appealing at all.
Who knew that this master plan would be bad?
It was the first time since 2015 that the Disney Empire finished below first place at the box office.
But for the first time in a long time, Disney didn't have one of the top three movies โ those spots belong to Warner Bros.' "Barbie" ($1.4 billion) and Universal's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($1.3 billion) and "Oppenheimer" ($950 million). It's also the first time since 2014 (except for the pandemic-stricken 2020 and 2021) that none of Disney's movies crossed the $1 billion benchmark.'
Variety also points out that Disney's box office failure comes at a large cost for the company since they spend MUCH more on making movies than the other studios, so when a movie would be a big success for Sony it's still a flop for Disney because of their unreal spending.
$200-$250 million is an average Disney movie budget. So if they don't reach the quarter billion box office numbers then they are losing money.
This and their tremendous losses to DeSantis in Florida mean that Disney just completed one of their worst years in history.
Go woke, go broke!
