This January, a firefighter's life was forever changed after waking up to the alarm of the Safe Haven Baby Box while on an overnight shift at the fire station in Ocala, Florida.

The firefighter, who did not give his identity for the sake of preserving his family's privacy, said that he expected the alarm to be a false alarm, which is somewhat common, but instead, he opened the box and was face-to-face with his future daughter.

He told Today when he opened the box,

She had a little bottle with her and she was just chilling. I picked her up and held her. We locked eyes, and that was it. I've loved her ever since that moment.

The firefighter then took the newborn baby to the hospital but left a note with her.

I explained that my wife and I had been trying for 10 years to have a baby. I told them we'd completed all of our classes in the state of Florida and were registered to adopt. All we needed was a child.

Two days later, the firefighter and his wife brought the baby home from the hospital, and three months later, the couple was able to adopt the baby girl who they named Zoey.

The way I found her... This was God helping us out.

While the firefighter and his wife have chosen to remain anonymous, they decided to go public with their story in hopes that their daughter's birth mother will see that her child is safe and loved.

The Safe Haven founder Monica Kelsey thanked the birth parents in a press conference following the firefighter finding Zoey, saying,

We want to address the parents who legally surrendered this infant. And right now I'm going to talk directly to her or him. Thank you. Thank you for keeping your child safe. Thank you for bringing your child to a place that you knew was going to take care of this child. And thank you for doing what you felt was best.

Currently, there are 148 Safe Haven Baby Boxes in the United States, and so far 31 babies have been safely surrendered in them.
