Pinellas County in Florida has been devastated by swarms of looters in the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
Just this month, they have arrested 45 people on charges that include burglary, loitering and prowling, grand theft, armed robbery, vandalism and trespassing.
41 of the 45 arrested are illegal immigrants.
In a press conference, County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said:
They're going into people's homes, they're taking stuff, they're rummaging through their things. In one case, it was an armed robbery where they went in and stole from them forcibly.
Here is the full press conference:
It‘s maddening. This is the epitome of people trying to exploit others when they're down and when they're out and when they're trying to rebuild and they've got nothing.
The evacuation orders before the hurricanes affected over 500,000 residents, according to the sheriff. This left thousands of homes open to burglary by illegal migrants living in the area.
Internet commenters and locals were understandably outraged:
This is how high-trust societies crumble.
