Florida law now requires people to put their biological sex on driver's licenses, not gender identity. Lying could bring you criminal charges.

Another Florida W.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is making it so people can no longer change the gender listed on their driver's license based on their chosen "gender identity."

Now whatever your birth sex is is your sex listed on your license.

I can't WAIT to hear how this endangers trans lives or whatever they're saying now.

Florida's DMV makes it clear that, while changing your gender on your license might make you "feel" good, it completely undermines the entire purpose of the license.

...The term "gender" in s. 322.08, F.S., does not refer to a person's internal sense of his or her gender role or identification, but has historically and commonly been understood as a synonym for "sex," which is determined by innate and immutable biological and genetic characteristics. Additionally, a driver license is an identification document and, as such, serves a critical role in assisting public and private entities in correctly establishing the identity of a person presenting the license. Permitting an individual to alter his or her license to reflect an internal sense of gender role or identity, which is neither immutable nor objectively verifiable, undermines the purpose of an identification record and can frustrate the state's ability to enforce its laws.

TL;DR:

Florida ain't messing around either. They aren't going to be handing out new IDs based on someone's feelings.

"The department is charged with important statutory duties, to include issuance of Florida driver's licenses and identification cards, and to issue replacement credentials under specific circumstances," said Molly Best, director of communications for the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

"Expanding the department's authority to issue replacement licenses dependent on one's internal sense of gender or sex identification is violative of the law and does not serve to enhance the security and reliability of Florida-issued licenses and identification cards," she told The Daily Signal. "The security, reliability and accuracy of government-issued credentials is paramount."

And apparently, this WILL potentially "hurt" the trans community because it's a crime to lie on official documents.

Yeah, it's kind of against the law to lie on government docs and commit fraud.

Trans Floridians hardest hit, I guess.

ACLU bemoans the lack of access to "accurate" ID for trans people.
