Everything is bigger in Texas ... including the stupidity of Democrats?
Texas is redistricting for Congress and Republicans are drawing lines that will be more favorable for their party. Whether you like it or not, both parties do this everywhere all the time.
Without a quorum, however, they can't move forward. Texas Dems decided to flee the state to deep-blue Illinois to avoid a vote in the Texas Legislature (AKA their literal jobs). They thought it would be a great PR campaign, I guess?
Well, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has formally announced that he will fire them, then jail them, if they don't show up TODAY for a vote. π
A few quotes:
...Democrats hatched a deliberate plan not to show up for work, for the specific purpose of abdicating the duties of their office and thwarting the chamber's business.
That amounts to an abandonment or forfeiture of an elected state office. When the Governor calls a Special Session, our Constitution provides that the 'Legislature shall meet.' TEX. CONST. art. III, $ 5 (emphasis added). It's not optional. It's a duty.
...
The derelict Democrat House members must return to Texas and be in attendance when the House reconvenes at 3:00 PM on Monday, August 4, 2025. For any member who fails to do so, I will invoke Texas Attorney General Opinion No. KP-0382 to remove the missing Democrats from membership in the Texas House.
In that opinion statement, AG Ken Paxton's office said a Texas court may determine that a legislator has "forfeited his or her office due to abandonment and can remove the legislator from office."
In this case, the governor would be allowed to "swiftly fill vacancies" under Article III, Section 13 of the Texas Constitution.
(This would essentially gut the Democratic Party in Texas.)
BUT THAT'S NOT ALL:
In addition to abandoning their offices, these legislators may also have committed felonies. Many absentee Democrats are soliciting funds to evade the fines they will incur under House rules. Any Democrat who 'solicits, accepts, or agrees to accept' such funds to assist in the violation of legislative duties or for purposes of skipping a vote may have violated bribery laws. See TEX. PENAL CODE Β§ 36.02.
The same could be true for any other person who 'offers, confers, or agrees to confer' such funds to fleeing Democrat House members. I will use my full extradition authority to demand the return to Texas of any potential out-of-state felons.

Do you understand what just happened?
Texas Republicans just decided to use political power to destroy their opponents.
Democrats have spent the last decade trying to jail and censor their political opponents while weaponizing the system to stack the odds in their favor. They even opened up the nation's borders at great harm to their own countrymen in order to get more warm bodies for their congressional districts.
Oh, and the sitting Democratic president of the United States purposely created a hoax to undermine the incoming Republican president in 2015!
It seems Texas is aware that the genie of scorched-earth politics can't be put back into the bottle until Dems are willing to put down their own swords and come to the table (AKA not jetting off to Illinois to avoid their jobs).
Speaking of jets...
