Imagine it's freezing cold. Your windows are so cold that your breath immediately turns to frost on them, and your luxury car's heater won't turn on.

Not because it's broken … but because it's been remotely disabled.

That's the scenario hundreds of thousands of German Lexus and Toyota owners woke up to as the government outlawed heating internal combustion vehicles while parked.

The car owners were greeted with the following message when they woke up:

We would like to inform you that we have set the parking heater remotely. We are aware that this is a comfort function that is especially appreciated in the winter months. However, the vehicles produced for the European market are subject to different national requirements. Due to the current legal situation, we no longer see any possibility of maintaining the function for the German market.

Toyota spokesman Ralph Müller confirmed the change.

The legislator assesses this as an unnecessary running of the engine or as avoidable exhaust gas pollution, which is prohibited.

The feature is still available for electric vehicles.

It shouldn't come as much surprise in the country that has also made it too expensive for their citizens to heat their homes.

Climate change craziness aside, I have to say, stories like this have made zero-remote access the single-greatest selling point of any new car I purchase in the future.
