Caleb White, 17, a standout basketball player at Pinson Valley High School in Alabama, died after collapsing during a basketball team workout on Thursday.

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday, but there is not much public information about White's death at this time, Fox News reports:

White collapsed at 1:12 p.m. Thursday, and life-saving measures were performed until paramedics arrived. He was pronounced dead just over an hour later at a nearby hospital.

White's grandfather said Caleb was an honor roll student "very respectful, high intellect, excellent role model" and a "phenomenal basketball player."

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Caleb's family, his classmates and basketball team and extended school family," said Alvin Briggs, Director of Alabama High School Athletic Association. "He was an outstanding student-athlete and role model."

This young man, who would've been entering his senior year, really was a baller.

He was a first-team all-state selection last season. He was reportedly ranked the No. 25 point guard in the United States and No. 2 in Alabama.

"Heartbroken," Pinson Mayor Joe Cochran said. "No words can be gathered to provide comfort to a family and community experience the loss of young life.

"I was honored to know Caleb personally and loved the spirit he carried. Life is fleeting. Enjoy every day as the treasure it is. I know Caleb did."

Unfortunately, White's death joins a long list of sudden collapses of athletes with many resulting in death. Just two weeks ago, Bronny James, 18, son of professional basketball star LeBron James, suffered cardiac arrest during a basketball workout.

What the heck is going on?
