Outgoing Canadian PM (and certified girly man) Justin Trudeau has bent the knee:
Amazing. They said tariffs were a bad idea, but in just two days, we got Canada and Mexico to do their part protecting our common borders!
I want to draw your attention to Trudeau's second promise, however.
In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering. I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million.
Approximately 311,000 Americans died from opioid overdoses from 2020 to 2023. If trends held, another 80,000 or so died in 2024.
Canada is only responsible for a small percentage of the drugs that are killing Americans (between 1 and 4%), but as Trump outlined in a February 1 executive order:
There is also a growing presence of Mexican cartels operating fentanyl and nitazene synthesis labs in Canada.
The Canadian border has been extremely porous for years, and that hasn't gone unnoticed by the cartels that are looking for less hardened ways to get into the country, particularly with the US-Mexico border being secured as we speak.
If you were a cartel leader and you saw Trump's border czar and defense secretary visiting the border and saying things like this ๐
What alternatives would you consider to make sure your "product" didn't get intercepted?
Maybe look to the north?
More from that executive order:
Gang members, smugglers, human traffickers, and illicit drugs of all kinds have poured across our borders and into our communities. Canada has played a central role in these challenges, including by failing to devote sufficient attention and resources or meaningfully coordinate with United States law enforcement partners to effectively stem the tide of illicit drugs.
This isn't just Trump's opinion. Trudeau's primary political opponent, Pierre Poilievre, has called him out to his face in parliament for loosening restrictions on hard drugs (and thus the trade and transport of said drugs). ๐
America now has 10,000 Mexican troops on its southern border and 10,000 Canadian troops on its northern border.
All it took was the will to win.
Let's see what else Trump gets them to do during this one month tariff pause. It's time for them to clean their rooms!
