House Democrats push bill to add FOUR seats to Supreme Court

Eight Democrats voiced their support for a bill on Monday that would add four more seats to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The bill, called the Judiciary Act, was originally introduced in 2021. Sponsors cited recent Supreme Court decisions, such as the overturning of Roe v. Wade, as a reason for renewed support for the bill.

Supporters of the bill spoke at a press conference on Monday hosted by the Take Back the Court Action Fund.

The lead sponsor of the bill, Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) said the Supreme Court is "at crisis with itself and with our democracy" and "basic freedoms are under assault."

"[The Supreme Court is] making decisions that usurp the power of the legislative and executive branches," Johnson said.

"You can see the gleam in [Justice Samuel Alito's] eye as he thinks about what he wants to do to decimate the rights of people and put us back in the Dark Ages."

Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA) said the Supreme Court has "gone rogue" and "become a radical institution."

Additional speakers at the press conference included:

  • Rep. Andy Levin (D-MI)
  • Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL)
  • Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ)
  • Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI)
  • Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX)
  • Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA), sponsor of the bill in the Senate
