People often get mad at me for being a news junkie. They just want to bury their head in the sand about all the stuff going on in the world, and I get it.
But reading the news can literally save your life.
For example, just last February we published a story about a Brazilian who was shot and killed by his own gun because he carried it into an MRI room.
And because of that story, I now know that carrying a metallic gun into a room with a giant magnet is a bad idea.
(WHO KNEW?)
Perhaps if an unnamed Wisconsin woman had read the story she could have avoided repeating the Brazilian guy's mistake.
Yes, a 57-year old Wisconsin woman was shot in the butt by her own gun because she tried to bring the weapon into the bore of an MRI machine.
According to the adverse event report submitted to the FDA,
"A patient was brought into the magnet room with a concealed ferrous handgun. In the process of entering the bore, the handgun was attracted to the magnet and fired a single round.
"The patient received a gunshot wound in the right buttock area. The patient was examined by a physician at the site who described the entry and exit holes as very small and superficial, only penetrating subcutaneous tissue.
"Per protocol, the patient was taken to the hospital and the patient later informed the site that they were okay and healing well. The site reported that prior to the exam the patient had undergone a standard screening procedure for ferrous objects, which includes weapons specifically, and answered no to all screening questions."
Just like the Brazilian guy, she lied about having the gun.
It's not rocket science, folks, but it is science.
Taking a gun to an MRI is dangerous.
Stop doing it.
