Joe Manchin just became the latest Democrat to jump ship from the Democratic Party, potentially swinging the balance in the Senate.

The Democratic Party is down one senator in an extremely tight upper chamber where the VP has had to cast tie-breaking votes for the last two years.

I guess the country can finally heal now since Manchin is an Independent?

Why it matters: Manchin, who flirted with an independent presidential bid earlier this year, has said he's not running for Senate re-election. But leaving the party could give him the flexibility to change tack and run for Senate or West Virginia governor as an independent.

We may not be hearing the last of the senator!

Democrats no longer have a majority in the senate. And if Manchin caucuses with Republicans ... look out.
