Biden's Justice Department sues Texas over heartbeat abortion ban

The Biden Justice Department on Thursday announced that it is suing the state of Texas over its ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy:

Announcing the lawsuit at a news conference in Washington, Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Texas law's "unprecedented" design seeks "to prevent women from exercising their constitutional rights by thwarting judicial review for as long as possible."

"The act is clearly unconstitutional under longstanding Supreme Court precedent" Garland said.

Decades-long Supreme Court precedent has directed that states for the most part may only regulate abortion after the point of "viability," or the point in pregnancy at which a child can survive outside of his mother.

Texas's ban represents the most significant abortion restriction in the U.S. in many years.
