National Spelling Bee Winner Gives A Slightly Disguised Shoutout To Bill Murray Before Correctly Spelling The Winning Word
· Jul 9, 2021 · NottheBee.com

Zaila Avant-garde cracked up the judges and commentators of the Scripps National Spelling Bee when she asked a particularly funny question involving one of America's favorite comic actors before correctly spelling the word "Murraya" to win the competition.

Yes, in order to find out if she was on the right track in spelling the name of this plant, Zaila asked "does this word contain the English name 'Murray' which can be the name of a comedian?"

The question got the small audience (due to Covid), the judges, and the TV announcers to crack up.

The announcer makes the comment "Bill Murray made the spelling bee" before the other commentator pointed out that Zaila was using this question to make sure she was on the right track.

Zaila then proceeded to correctly spell the word, thus becoming the Scripps National Spelling Bee 2021 Champion! Zaila also took home the grand prize of $50,000!

Congratulations to Zaila, and thanks for the laugh.
