New expedition to Titanic reveals collapse of iconic bow railing as ship continues to deteriorate
· Sep 7, 2024 · NottheBee.com

A haunting, somber reminder that though it has remained well-preserved for over a century, the Titanic wreck is in a state of active and regular decay:

In its first expedition to the Titanic in 14 years, the company with exclusive salvage rights to the wreckage site [RMS Titanic Inc.] said it had located a bronze statue thought to have been lost forever, and it also discovered some deterioration of the ship. ...

The footage shows the partial collapse of a railing at the bow of the ship. ... As recently as 2022, images from a different expedition showed the bow's railing still intact.

Many of us will remember that bow most prominently from the (admittedly insipid) 1997 love story "Titanic," particularly the scene where the vagabond Jack helps socialite Rose pretend to be a ship's figurehead:

Alas, the bow, like the rest of the ship, is increasingly falling apart:

RMS Titanic Inc.'s recent expedition netted over two million photographs of the wreck, with divers scrambling to visually preserve as much of the wreck as possible as it continues to collapse.

Footage of the wreck remains as haunting as ever:

Wild that we can still explore a shipwreck two miles beneath the ocean surface more than 100 years after it sank.
