New York bill would require criminal background checks to purchase 3D printers

Ghost guns, those created by 3D printers, that can't be tracked and regulated by the government are a hot topic among anti-Second Amendment authoritarians.

And since 3D printers are so easy to come by these days, what's a government desperate to suppress its citizenry to do?

Criminal background checks on all 3D printer sales.

Yup, New York bill 2025-A2228 reads as follows:

Any retailer of a three-dimensional printer sold in this state which is capable of printing a firearm, or any components of a firearm, is required and authorized to request and receive criminal history information concerning such purchaser from the division of criminal justice services in accordance with the provisions of section eight hundred forty-five-b of the executive law. Access to and use of such information shall be governed by the provisions of such section. The Division of Criminal Justice is authorized to submit fingerprints to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for a national criminal history check.

That's right! If this bill passes into law, New York residents will have to submit to fingerprinting and a criminal background check in order to purchase a 3D printer in their state.

Also, the whole bit about any 3D printer "capable of printing a firearm or component of a firearm" is nonsense because every 3D printer is capable of printing some components of a firearm.

Ultimately, the law is doomed to fail since you can build a 3D printer with components found at your local hardware/electronics store if you know what you're doing or are willing to spend a couple of hours watching a Youtube video.

Are they going to require a background check for shopping at Home Depot too?

Besides that, think of all the "justice impacted individuals" who might have jobs working with 3D printers. Where are the social-justice warriors fighting for their rights?
