New York City has renamed monkeypox "MPV" because the older name was offensive to LGBT people or something

New York is out here tackling the pressing public health crises that truly matter:

Name Change

Moving forward, the Health Department will refer to [monkeypox] as MPV. The previous name is an inaccurate and stigmatizing label for a virus that is primarily affecting a community that has already suffered a long history of bigotry. Stigma is a shadow affliction that can follow viruses and drive people away from care, even when the illness itself is treatable. The Department requested the World Health Organization change the name, and continues to urge global health authorities to make this modification universal. However, the equity considerations are too great to wait any longer.

New York getting tired of the UN dragging its feet on this momentous task:

"Monkeypox" to "MPV – isn't that just an acronym for "monkeypox virus"? Isn't it basically the same thing?

Well, you still get points for trying, New York!
