New Zealand plans to tax cow burps in order to fight climate change. This is a real story.

Life expectancy is like 200% what it was a century ago, food has never been more abundant, energy is cheap and accessible, and even the worst excesses of the so-called "climate crisis" could not possibly outweigh all of these astonishing, unprecedented human achievements.

But oh well, our climate overlords still want to make everything more expensive and drive critical producers out of business anyway:

New Zealand's government on Tuesday proposed taxing the greenhouse gasses that farm animals make from burping and peeing as part of a plan to tackle climate change. ...

But farmers quickly condemned the plan. Federated Farmers, the industry's main lobby group, said the plan would "rip the guts out of small-town New Zealand" and see farms replaced with trees.

Federated Farmers President Andrew Hoggard said farmers had been trying to work with the government for more than two years on an emissions reduction plan that wouldn't decrease food production.

Here's a question: If you had to bet on who will make the better assessment of a policy's effect on the farming industry, who would you choose: A bureaucrat or a farmer?

Hint:

Don't worry, though, the New Zealand government has this one sewn up!

The government said the farm levy would be a world first, and that farmers should be able to recoup the cost by charging more for climate-friendly products.

Before you burst into tears over that, at least allow yourself a bitter laugh at these clowns.
