In a decision that runs counter to what most organizations are doing in 2025, the National Football League restated its commitment to adhering to policies promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, because … well, for some reason.
Yep, at his annual State of the League Address to kick off Super Bowl week in New Orleans, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell doubled down on woke.
By hiring "the best possible talent," Goodell means "people of specific races and people groups to fill our quotas rather than anything that has to do with actual merit."
The NFL, which has had the "Rooney Rule" since 2003 that requires teams to interview minority candidates before hiring general managers and head coaches, has come under fire in recent years due to increasing "wokeness" alienating fans.
Time will tell if the NFL's ongoing commitment to DEI practices will cause further harm to its popularity with a middle America that voted overwhelmingly to elect a decidedly anti-DEI president.
Then again, even if it doesn't, this might:
Yikes.
At least some of us will still be able to tell our children what it was like when football was football.
