Won't somebody - anybody! - think of the poor oil barons?!?
Trump hasn't even been in office for two weeks, but The New York Times is already defending big oil companies to paint Trump as a meanie.
If Trump imposes tariffs on Canada and Mexico, then oil companies may take a hit. And we all know how much the New York Times cares about oil companies!
Here they are, arguing something you really never thought you'd see from the leftist publication.
The United States is the world's largest oil producer, but the country's refineries are designed to turn a mix of different types of oil into fuels like gasoline and diesel. Roughly 60 percent of the oil that the United States imports comes from Canada, and about 7 percent comes from Mexico. Many refineries are set up to use those imports and cannot easily switch to oil from other places.
Analysts are not sure just how Mr. Trump's tariffs might ripple through the oil market — and who would bear the added expenses. The costs may not be significant if the tariffs are in place only temporarily, or if the administration makes it easy for refiners to obtain waivers to keep buying Canadian or Mexican crude without paying extra.
Yes, a whole story about how Trump's tariffs COULD be bad. But we're not sure they will be.
But the New York Times suddenly believes the evil rich oil barrons and cares about their profits because, well ...

Mr. Trump has said that the tariffs would go into effect on Saturday. On Thursday, he suggested that he might exempt oil.
So it's a hypothetical story based on something that Trump may not even go through with. Not to mention we're going to begin to drill, baby, drill to make up for any international shortages.
Either way, I can't wait for the NYT op-ed next week arguing how it's bad that Trump is cozying up to Big Oil by exempting them from the tariffs!
