Well, that was fast!
On Wednesday of this week, President Joe Biden was asked about reports that his administration was planning to give $450,000 to illegal immigrants who had been separated at the U.S. southern border. He called those reports "garbage."
Now, apparently, the reports are not only not garbage but Biden himself is totally on board with the plan!
President Biden is "perfectly comfortable" with his administration paying immigrant families to resolve lawsuits alleging they suffered trauma from being separated after illegally crossing the Mexico border, a White House spokeswoman said Thursday, in a bid to clarify Mr. Biden's comment a day earlier that such payouts weren't going to happen.
"If it saves taxpayer dollars and puts the disastrous history of the previous administration's use of zero tolerance and family separation behind us, the president is perfectly comfortable with the Department of Justice settling with the individuals and families who are currently in litigation with the U.S. government," spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said...
In an exchange with a reporter on Wednesday, that number was cited, prompting Mr. Biden's denial that such payments would be made. "It's not true," he said. Ms. Jean-Pierre on Thursday suggested the dollar amounts under consideration were smaller, but didn't say how much money Mr. Biden would be comfortable seeing the U.S. government pay separated immigrant families.
Ookay. So when Biden said the $450,000 report was "garbage" and "not true" and that those payouts were "not going to happen," he just meant—though he did not clarify in any way—that the payouts are going to happen, just not necessarily at the level of $450k.
Here's a simpler suggestion: Nobody told Biden about the payouts (or he forgot about them), he publicly denied them, and now his administration is doing serious damage control to try and salvage the whole absurd program.
