There's no more porn in Utah, at least not from the world's largest pornography provider, PornHub.
It's all thanks to Utah's new bill S.B.287 signed into law by Governor Cox. Like other bills being passed in the United States, the law requires pornography sites like PornHub to actually verify users are at least 18 years old.
In fact, the text of the law is almost identical to the first Louisiana law that started off the push for real age verification on pornography sites with a state-issued ID.
Other states like Utah followed suit because websites like PornHub quickly and easily added an age-verification function.
However, as many pointed out, it wasn't hard to get around the gateway by using a VPN that makes it look like someone is in another state.
But the laws don't allow the companies off for wily minors accessing their sites. The laws just say that if a minor access pornography on a site, then that site is liable.
So, now PornHub is cutting off the last state to pass the law, entirely.
In a video displayed on the site for users in Utah, (I thank the other media channels for taking the bullet and verifying this information because I don't want to) a PornHub rep gives the following explanation:
Dear user,
As you may know, your elected officials in Utah are requiring us to verify your age before allowing you access to our website. While safety and compliance are at the forefront of our mission, giving your ID card every time you want to visit an adult platform is not the most effective solution for protecting our users, and in fact, will put children and your privacy at risk.
In addition, mandating age verification without proper enforcement gives platforms the opportunity to choose whether or not to comply. As we've seen in other states, this just drives traffic to sites with far fewer safety measures in place. Very few sites are able to compare to the robust Trust and Safety measures we currently have in place. To protect children and user privacy, any legislation must be enforced against all platforms offering adult content.
The safety of our users is one of our biggest concerns. We believe that the best and most effective solution for protecting children and adults alike is to identify users by their device and allow access to age-restricted materials and websites based on that identification. Until a real solution is offered, we have made the difficult decision to completely disable access to our website in Utah.
Please contact your representatives before it is too late and demand device-based verification solutions that make the internet safer while also respecting your privacy.
That's funny right there.
All they want is the ability to identify users' machines to cross-track their internet usage and sell their data.
Of course, how someone couldn't bypass this blockade with a VPN isn't clear either.
Still, having no porn in a state is better than having any.
I know some will disagree (I'm looking at you, Dennis Prager).
