It looks like the Russia-Ukraine war may, finally, be coming to an end.
(I hope.)
President Trump and President Putin have agreed to a summit in Alaska to discuss ending the war.
From Fox News:
The leaders are expected to meet in Alaska, Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
'The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska,' Trump wrote in his Friday evening post. 'Further details to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter!'
Initially, it was expected that this meeting would take place in Europe, possibly Italy, Switzerland, or even Hungary. But I guess Trump showed Putin a map so he could see how close to Alaska Russia really is.
The possibility of Zelensky also meeting with Putin, with Trump as a mediator, appears to be on the table finally.
Following the Wednesday Trump-Putin call, the U.S. president also spoke with Zelenskyy along with European leaders on the potential for a trilateral meeting.
Moscow - which has thus far refused to hold direct meetings with Putin and Zelenskyy - has not appeared likely to engage in a trilateral meeting any time soon, as the Kremlin's foreign policy advisor noted on Wednesday that the potential for such a meeting was "mentioned" but 'not discussed.'
Putin is going in hardball, saying Russia will end the war if they can keep eastern Ukraine. Trump, a realist, says that it won't all be one sided and that both sides will have to give a little.
Zelensky, for his part, apparently remains his typical defiant self.
It's not clear how Zelensky, Putin, or Trump ever plan to end this war if there can be no agreement reached.
If Trump is able to pull this off it will be very impressive.
