Report: Reddit bans group from "misgendering," "deadnaming," using "groomer" to talk about LGBT people
· Jul 19, 2022 · NottheBee.com

A sub-Reddit group moderator told its community last week that Reddit admins provided a "list of some things that will result in removals and possibly a ban," including "misgendering a trans person," "deadnaming a trans person," "referring to being trans as a 'mental illness,'" and using "'Groomer' to refer to LGBT."

The update was posted by subreddit moderator "u/theotherotherhand" on the "r/PoliticalCompassMemes" (PCM) subreddit, asking the community to "tone back [their] language and make a shift away from certain types of memes."

Here is a list of some things that will result in removals and possibly a ban:

  • intentionally misgendering a trans person
  • referring to being trans as a "mental illness"
  • suicide statistics/"40%"
  • "transwomen aren't women"/"transmen aren't men"
  • "Tranny", "troon", "faggot", "you'll never be a real woman"
  • intentionally deadnaming a trans person, which means using their old name over their new one
  • equating LGBT with pedophilia
  • "Groomer" to refer to LGBT

The moderator asked users to "tone back [their] language and make a shift away from certain types of memes."

Reddit's content policy "Rule 1" states every user "has a right to use Reddit free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence" and that those "that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned."

The policy does not specify prohibited terms, phrases, or ideas that could be interpreted as a violation of the rule.

PCM's update was reposted on the "r/AgainstHateSubreddits" subreddit by moderator "u/Love_In_My_Heart."

The user celebrated the news, stating it reveals how admins "formally" interpret and enforce Rule 1 against "hate speech that targets LGBTQ people."

"The list tells us important facts about Reddit Trust & Safety's policy about Hate Speech that targets LGBTQ people," u/Love_In_My_Heart said. "Reddit admins told them specifically that Trust & Safety's policy on sitewide Rule 1 prohibiting promoting hatred based on identity or vulnerability now classes speech which calls LGBTQ people pedophiles or 'groomers' as HATE SPEECH."

"REDDIT ADMINS NOW ARE FORMALLY CONSIDERING THE 'LGBTQ PEOPLE ARE PEDOPHILES / GROOMERS' DEFAMATION TO BE HATE SPEECH."
