According to the Washington Post, ousted Fox News host and celebrity in his own right, Tucker Carlson, has been in talks with Donald Trump about the possibility of moderating a Republican candidate discussion in the upcoming presidential primaries.
The good news is that Tucker would be a great moderator and host. Everyone on the Right, from Only Trumpers to DeSantis backers, loves him.
Also, since Trump has already signaled that he doesn't think he will participate in the RNC debates, this gives everyone a chance to see Trump back out on the debate stage.
The bad news, of course, is that would mean Tucker isn't running.
Oh, but more good news! It would embarrass Fox News.
The idea, which he (Tucker) has discussed with Donald Trump, the front-runner for the party nomination, would test his vaunted sway over conservative politics. And it would take a jab at his former employer — Fox is hosting the first official primary debate, which Trump has threatened not to attend — if he can manage to make his grandest plan happen.
Imagine if Fox News hosted the "official" RNC debate and didn't even have the frontrunner and former president show up, but then later that week Trump is battling DeSantis with Tucker Carlson right in the middle.
They could stream the debate on ESPN "The Ocho" and it would get more viewers than the Fox debate.
The former Fox host's interest in a debate is said to stem in part from its potential to loosen the Republican National Committee's grip on the process, as well as to challenge the role traditionally played by the major television networks. "He could go straight to the candidates, stream it live, invite the networks but maintain control over the process," said one person familiar with the discussions.
Any move that gets Trump on stage for a debate against DeSantis is something I'm in favor of. And, at this point, it looks like Tucker is the best bet to make that happen.
