Welp.
The hope is that this is all a big nothingburger: Judge Merchan is reportedly going to give Trump an "unconditional discharge," which means no jail time or penalty. The word on the street is that Merchan wants to fulfill his judicial duty to the jury that convicted Trump by handing down a sentence.
Blind loyalty to pomp and circumstance are absolutely idiotic, however, when the case was one of multiple criminal trials leveled at Trump to keep him from winning reelection. Merchan says the sentencing is about showing "that all are equal and no one is above the law," but the majority of Americans that voted for Trump don't see this as proof that the system is equal or just.
They see it as a witch hunt that threatens the foundations of the justice system!
I'm sure the sentencing will be popular for the purposes of Democratic talking points over the next 4 years: After all, it will allow them to legally apply the label "felon" to Trump on every news segment of every station for every minute of the day.
But as for bringing healing or "bringing finality to this matter" (Merchan's words), all it's doing is rubbing salt in a variety of societal wounds ... and giving the absolute worst people the ammunition they need to keep those wounds open for years to come.
That Roberts and Barrett don't want to use their unique constitutional powers to play referee, unburden Merchan from his supposed sense of duty, and reset the scoreboard for America is disappointing indeed.
I'll leave you with Trump's response:
