San Francisco has been flying the "Appeal to Heaven" since 1964 but they just took it down cuz it's extremist now or something

Remember earlier this month when the Left went nuclear because Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito flew a Revolutionary War-era flag at his beach home?

Just to clarify, here's the flag in question that was causing a collective hissy fit from progressives:

It's a very normal, fine, non-controversial flag, rooted in some great American history (George Washington liked it, for example).

So I suppose it's unsurprising that, amid the current freakout, San Francisco has opted to throw it in the trash bin:

Eighteen flags have billowed over the neat rows of plane trees in San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza, among them a yellow 'Don't Tread on Me' flag, a Texas Lone Star flag and — until Saturday — an "Appeal to Heaven" flag like the one that has pitched Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito into controversy due to its association with the Jan. 6 insurrection.

(Ahhh, would it be a mainstream media story if it didn't have a reference to "the Jan. 6 insurrection?" Thank you, San Francisco Chronicle!)

Back to the flag: It has flown there since 1964, which is to say literally six decades. It was raised there on Flag Day of that year along with numerous other flags, each one of them commemorating "a key moment in or symbol in American history."

This is something even the ancient liberal stronghold of San Francisco used to understand: American history is American history. You don't have to get weird or political about it.

However, the Pine Tree flag has been "appropriated by conservative movements," according to the Chronicle. Of course, being "appropriated by conservative movements" is pretty much the worst, most diabolical thing that can happen to anything, right?

The city made this explicitly clear:

City parks officials quietly took down the Civic Center 'Appeal to Heaven' flag over the weekend, saying a statement to the Chronicle that although it originally signified the 'quest for American independence,' it has 'since been adopted by a different group — one that doesn't represent the city's values.'

I think it's clear what San Francisco's "values" are at this point.
