Secretary of State Marco Rubio says U.S. is dead-serious about Greenland, Panama Canal

What many people originally assumed was brash bluster from President Donald Trump is now being taken far more seriously — especially now that the Secretary of State is involved.

Marco Rubio appeared on The Megyn Kelly Show on SiriusXM and reiterated that the US's interest in acquiring Greenland and reacquiring control of the Panama Canal was not a laughing matter.

From the New York Post:

'This is not about acquiring land for the purpose of acquiring land,' the secretary of state continued. 'This is in our national interest and it needs to be solved.'

Trump had previously said all options for annexing Greenland were on the table — including military action — but Rubio clarified that the president's intent was to purchase it from Denmark.

'This is a businessman who's involved in politics, not a politician involved in politics,' Rubio explained. 'So he approaches these issues from a transactional, business point of view.'

'He is not going to begin what he views as a negotiation or a conversation by taking any leverage off the table.'

'He wants to buy it, he wants to pay for it,' the top US diplomat insisted.

Rubio explained that the U.S. is interested in both Greenland and the Panama Canal primarily for trade purposes, pointing out that both territories would be key strategic assets for Trump's goal of expanding U.S. trade enterprises.

Denmark and Panama (and China) are learning an important lesson:

Even when Trump is being funny, he's being serious.
