Smash Mouth's retired lead singer, Steve Harwell, has passed away at the age of 56 from liver failure.
Yesterday, Harwell was reportedly placed in hospice care with terminal liver failure. This morning, the singer passed away.
His death, at his home in Boise, Idaho, was confirmed by the band's manager, Robert Hayes, who said the cause was liver failure.
Smash Mouth had the monster hit "All-Star" in the '90s, which featured prominently in the opening of the blockbuster movie Shrek.
The internet has meme-ified the song, singer, and movie scene in millions of ways, making the band and the singer much loved on the internet.
Unfortunately, Harwell has suffered numerous health problems throughout the years.
After being diagnosed with cardiomyopathy a decade ago, which impairs the heart's ability to pump efficiently, Harwell has suffered medical setbacks including heart failure and acute Wernicke's encephalopathy, which impacts motor functions such as his speech and memory. The singer has also previously struggled with alcohol abuse.
In addition to his personal health problems, Harwell had a difficult personal life involving his family.
Harwell, despite all this, has brought much joy and happiness to millions with his music. I hope he is remembered for the joy he brought.
Our prayers go out to Harwell's family and the band.
