An Atlanta woman got the shock of her life when she looked at her credit card bill and found her local Subway had charged her $7,000 for an Italian sub.
Vera Conner orders the same sandwich from the store regularly.
"I know exactly what it normally costs. It's $7.54," she said.
But the credit card statement said the bill came out to $7,112.98.
"I could have gone to Italy and got the sandwich," she said.
But you know, it's really the convenience you're paying for.
Italy is a long ways away from Atlanta.
Conner found her receipt and noticed that there was a huge tip added to the bill, but the tip wasn't just random numbers.
They were numbers from her phone number.
At that franchise, customers can enter their phone number to get points, and if you're eating at Subway regularly you want the points.
"I must have been keying it in the pad, and the screen changed," Conner said.
It seems like a mistake that could happen to anyone, and she figured Subway would happily reverse the charges.
But the store owner refused to entertain the idea. Subway ignored her. And her bank refused to issue a chargeback.
"This is unbelievable because I feel like everyone that sees it, has to know that it's a mistake. I've worked in retail before. I know how we tally up at the end of the night," Conner said.
But all is not lost.
Now that the media are picking up the story, Subway is all ears!
The company says that they are aware that Conner disputed the charge and that they were in the middle of processing the chargeback.
Here's hoping they follow through.
And remember folks, things are rough out there. This isn't the time to be making $7,000 mistakes.
