The ACLU is suing to force South Carolina to adopt a mask mandate, making it unclear why the ACLU even exists anymore

The American Civil Liberties Union has a long and storied history as a stalwart defender of some of America's most precious, indispensable freedoms. Late in the game, however, they're apparently going for a rebrand as, you know, pretty much the exact opposite:

Sorry, just trying to piece this together here: Schools cannot mandate masks, but students can still wear them as much as they want, yet this is still, in the ACLU's words, a "disability rights issue?"

Evidently the issue is that, without universal mask compliance, "students with health conditions that make them vulnerable to COVID" are more at risk of catching it. Even if that is an accurate assessment of the science behind masking, it's also the case that forcing masks on every student would also exclude students with disabilities, namely those who because of their disabilities are unable to wear a mask.

It is a difficult situation no matter how you look at it. At the very least, the fact that the ACLU is coming down on the side of forced compliance to a one-size-fits-all medical intervention shows how far the group has fallen from its original, admirable purpose.
