Biden DOJ sues Apple, says "green bubble" texts stigmatize Android users
· Mar 25, 2024 · NottheBee.com

Is this the theme for 2024? It feels like we're seeing a pattern here.

The pattern is the Biden admin doing completely useless and stupid things, like suing McDonald's because of the ice cream machine, while the country falls apart.

I'm glad we got all of the real crimes cleaned up so that now the Department of Justice and Merrick Garland can solve the real societal plague of green text bubbles and the social stigma that surrounds them.

I mean, this is why we have government, isn't it? To get rid of the green text bubbles.

The notorious issue was heavily featured in the antitrust complaint filed by the DOJ and 16 state attorneys general in New Jersey federal court.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said Apple undermines rivals by having texts from Androids to iPhones suffer from "limited functionality."

Android users can't see typing indicators, experience poor video quality and have non-encrypted messages when texting with iPhone users.

Additionally, Apple has stifled rival apps that could have fixed the problem, the DOJ alleged.

Basically, it comes down to Apple making life harder for Android users and not going out of their way to make it easy for Android-ers and iPhone-ers to get along.

I mean, shocker, Apple wants you to buy their products.

"Many non-iPhone users also experience social stigma, exclusion, and blame for ‘breaking' chats where other participants own iPhones," the lawsuit claimed, adding that the effect is "particularly powerful for certain demographics, like teenagers."

I mean, this is a real thing. But is this something that the Department of Justice should be prioritizing? Fixing social stigma issues among high schoolers?

The obsession with green bubbles is part of the larger suit, which says Apple has a stranglehold on the market.

From the AP:

"Apple has locked its consumers into the iPhone while locking its competitors out of the market," said Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco. Stalling the advancement of the very market it revolutionized, she said, it has "smothered an entire industry."

Apple called the lawsuit "wrong on the facts and the law" and said it "will vigorously defend against it."

The suit takes aim at how Apple allegedly molds its technology and business relationships to "extract more money from consumers, developers, content creators, artists, publishers, small businesses, and merchants, among others."

Seems stupid.

And pointless.

And a waste of government time and treasure.

(Or, just another day in the Biden administration!)
