The city of Chicago is suing Glock (because of course). Let's review what a "Glock switch" is and why this lawsuit is dumb.

Chicago is out here taking everyone to court except the criminals.

Yeah, go after [checks notes] Glock. I guess if Chicago gets a few million dollars from Glock, then crime will be solved!!!

The lawsuit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, relies on a change in state law last year that allowed consumer fraud lawsuits against gun makers.

"The city of Chicago is encountering a deadly new frontier in the gun violence plaguing our communities because of the increase of fully automatic Glocks on our streets," Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement.

So it's important to note that these "switches" aren't legal.

You'd think the ATF could help Chicago crack down on them, but I guess they're too busy shooting some guy's dog in Texas because he didn't properly register his pistol brace.

Let me educate the non-gun folks (why don't you people own a gun yet?).

This is a diagram showing how a striker-fired pistol works, in this case a Glock, which pioneered the striker design over older hammer-fired designs (sorry, 1911 bois).

That orange rod at the back of the slide is the striker. Instead of a hammer dropping and igniting the primer in the bullet casing, the trigger releases the spring of that striker rod, which jumps forward and hits the bullet.

When the striker and the slide go back with the recoil from the gunpowder exploding, the striker naturally wants to come back and whack the next bullet in the chamber.

(Translation: It's really easy to make guns go full auto.)

To prevent this (because our government doesn't want us to have nice things), a piece of metal called a "sear" is added to the bottom of the striker that prevents it from moving forward until the trigger is pressed again.

A "Glock switch" can be inserted into the back of the gun to depress the trigger bar that connects with the sear, allowing the gun to fire full auto.

Here's a demonstration of what that looks like (this is a Glock designed specifically to be full auto):

'MURICA!

Sorry, that's just exciting.

But not so exciting for the residents of Chicago, who have thousands of 15-year-olds wandering the streets with little trigger discipline and even less accuracy.

[Warning: Chicago]

Here's the problem for the Dems:

They can't stop the criminals because switches are insanely easy to make. You can 3D print them.

(No, I'm not going to tell people how, FEDS, so don't come shoot my dog.)

So instead, they are going after the only thing they can (besides the criminals): Glock.

Here's the supreme irony: Just because it's called a "Glock" switch doesn't mean you can only install these things on a Glock.

You could take any modern striker-fired pistol and modify it this way.

Sure, Glock is the Honda Civic of the gun world. There are a thousand third-party parts that allow you to modify the thing. It's like LEGOs for actual men. The ease of modification, disassembly, and field repair, combined with reliability, is why Glock became famous. You want a gun that is easy to fix and clean and still shoots after being put through hell.

But any semi-auto gun can be made full auto with basic knowledge and some tools.

Chicago justified this targeted lawsuit by saying other gun manufacturers like Ruger or Smith & Wesson or Sig Sauer have designs that make installing such switches harder (never mind that a big part of that is due to patent law).

Indeed, in stark contrast to Glock pistols, the process of modifying most other popular pistols into machine guns, such as those produced by Smith & Wesson or Sig Sauer, requires time-consuming and difficult engineering well beyond the capability of most civilians.

Meanwhile, civilians turning hammer-fired 1911s into full-auto death machines:

Well, good luck with that lawsuit, Chicago!

I'm sure the criminals will still be laughing at you in 5 years as they install Glock switches from inside their stolen Kias.
