Do you ever get one of those intensely irritating "We're calling about your car warranty!" robocalls on your phone and you think to yourself, "Ooooh, if I could just get my hands on this stinkin' company…"
Well, the FCC just did get their hands on that stinkin' company. And they didn't waste the opportunity:
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has issued a record breaking $299,997,000 million fine against an auto warranty scam call operation.
The fine hit an 'international network of companies' after more than five billion robocalls were made to more than 500 million phone numbers in a three-month period in 2021.
The companies were said to have violated federal statutes, FCC regulation and federal spoofing laws by using more than one million different caller IDs to trick people.
It couldn't have happened to a nicer scam company!
The telemarketers also reportedly called people on the do-not-call list and made "pre-recorded voice calls" which "[failed] to give a call-back number so people could block the unwanted callers."
Amazingly, the company was given about eight months to respond to the allegations against it; they didn't, leading to the massive fine.
Funny: These people call you all day, every day, but when it comes to responding to their own criminal behavior, they can't be reached!
The FCC, meanwhile, says it has directed "all US-based voice service providers to cease carrying traffic associated with certain numbers."
Hopefully that settles it!
