FDA approves phase 3 trial using LSD to treat anxiety

You can't make this stuff up.

The FDA has approved a Phase III study with the company MindMed, using the hallucinogen LSD to treat anxiety.

That means that the LSD tests have gone through the safety and efficacy tests in Phase II, fairing better than placebo. Now they're moving on to full testing with 200 patients.

In fact, they've already dosed their first patient.

'Today marks a pivotal moment in our journey towards advancing a novel treatment option for the 20 million people in the U.S. living with [General Anxiety Disorder] GAD. Building on our scientifically rigorous Phase 2b study, which demonstrated efficacy that far exceeds today's standard of care and a favorable tolerability profile, our Phase 3 studies are designed to adhere to the highest clinical and ethical standards and are in alignment with guidance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration,' said Daniel R. Karlin, M.D., M.A., Chief Medical Officer of MindMed.

Phase 3 tests for adverse effects of the drugs, but we already know what those are with LSD.

Here are some of the known side effects of LSD if you're not familiar:

  • Hallucinations

  • Euphoria

  • Paranoia and Delusions

  • Blending of Senses (hearing colors, tasting sounds)

  • Mood Swings

And while that all sounds trippy, the worst side effects are yet to come, especially with a drug we are apparently going to use on patients with GAD:

  • Fear

  • Anxiety

We've known all this since the '70s.

Of course, I'm no doctor, but it seems crazy to treat anxiety with an anxiety-inducing drug ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

After the increase in mental illness that followed medicinal marijuana, I can't see this turning out any better.
