The federal government is suing Amazon for allegedly tricking customers into signing up for Prime

Amazon Prime has a whole host of tremendous benefits that come with it. But that doesn't mean you should be, you know, fooled into signing up for it.

That's what the FTC thinks, anyway:

The Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday sued Amazon, alleging the nation's dominant online retailer intentionally duped millions of consumers into signing up for its mainstay Prime program and "sabotaged" their attempts to cancel.

The company is accused of violating the FTC Act and the Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act with the use of "dark patterns," which are meant to effectively trick people into picking a certain option.

You've probably encountered these before: Popup ads with huge signup buttons and teensy-weensy little "no thank you" options.

Amazon "tricked and trapped people into recurring subscriptions without their consent, not only frustrating users but also costing them significant money," FTC Chair Lina Khan claims.

The federal commission has reportedly been conducting this investigation since 2021.
