The takeaway from this is that the people of Hong Kong want freedom, but the Chinese Communist Party is doing everything it can to destroy that dream:
The final edition of the Hong Kong pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily has sold more than 1 million copies.
The Associated Press reported that the paper printed 1 million copies of its last edition, up from 80,000 it normally prints.
The front page had an image of an employee waiving at supporters with the headline "Hong Kongers bid a painful farewell in the rain, ‘We support Apple Daily.' " The paper sold out by 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, according to the AP.
The newspaper is being forced to shut down after the government arrested 5 of its executives and seized $2.3 million in assets under its new security law, which is widely seen as mainland China's largest step in bringing the former British port under communist rule.
"This is our last day, and last edition, does this reflect the reality that Hong Kong has started to lose its press freedom and freedom of speech?" said a graphic designer for the paper, Dickson Ng. "Why does it have to end up like this?"
Why indeed?
