Alex Trebek left us last November and it seems like eons ago—certainly this week more than ever:
Mike Richards, who was named the new host of "Jeopardy!" last week, is abruptly leaving the role as the beloved game show confronts a roiling controversy over offensive and sexist comments he made on a podcast several years ago.
Mr. Richards, who as the show's executive producer helped oversee the search for Alex Trebek's replacement — before he himself was named to the position — said on Friday in a staff memo that the controversy had made "clear that moving forward as host would be too much of a distraction for our fans and not the right move for the show."
Sigh.
You know who was un-cancellable? Alex Trebek. The guy apparently lived his life free from the sort of petty, sordid scandals that result in instant cancellation these days—but you get the sense that even if something had cropped up at some point, he would have just shrugged it off.
I mean, apparently the most controversial position he ever took in his life was that hockey is a good sport. Totally forgivable.
If there's one upside to this silly little controversy, it's that LeVar Burton—the legendary host of Reading Rainbow and the man behind longtime chief engineer Geordi LaForge on Star Trek: The Next Generation—is once again trending on social media as a possible permanent Jeopardy! host. One can hope.
Burton himself seemed in unusually good spirits on Friday morning after the news broke:
We sure hope so, LeVar!

P.S. – Speaking of jeopardy, these kids thought they were in danger when their parents hired a Bigfoot impersonator for a birthday party!
