This is the kind of statistic that makes your eyes absolutely pop:
There have been at least 478 tornado reports across 25 states so far this year and that's double the average for this point in a year.
Those numbers will make even experienced tornado chasers turn their heads.
It's been a busy tornado season thus far. The thing is, it's not even tornado season yet. April is traditionally the beginning of the most active period of tornadic activity in the United States. The month just began and we've already been firing on all cylinders for weeks now.
Among the latest twisters was one reported in Missouri early Wednesday:
A "large and dangerous" tornado touched down in Bollinger County, Missouri around 3:50 a.m. on Wednesday, leading to reports of widespread damage, injuries, and fatalities. ...
Local 6 Meteorologist Noah Bergren — who joined meteorologist Nolan Cain in studio this morning to cover the tornado — said it was likely an EF-2 or higher based on radar data.
I'd definitely put that tornado in the "or higher" category, based on footage of the destruction.
Potential twisters were projected from Memphis to Michigan on Wednesday, meanwhile.
