On Tuesday, Alabama State Representative Barry Moore went to the Family Firearms gun shop in Troy, Alabama to unveil proposed legislation that would declare the AR-15 to be the National Gun of America.
We have many national symbols in the U.S., from the Star Spangled Banner to the bald eagle, so why not add something as all-American as a national gun?
In a statement announcing the legislation, Moore said,
The Second Amendment is as American a right as freedom of speech, religion, and the press. Second Amendment rights are worth protecting and must not be infringed, and we must send a message that we will meet every attack on any of our constitutional rights.
So when the federal government comes for your guns, just remember, red-state politicians have your back.
The text of the bill has not yet been submitted, but according to congressional records it would
declare an AR-15 style rifle chambered in a .223 Remington round or a 5.56x45mm NATO round to be the National Gun of the United States.
There are approximately 20 million AR-15-style weapons circulating in the United States, which is 50 times more than the number of bald eagles out there, so it's basically a national symbol already.
Why not make it official?
Sonny Parker, the owner of Family Firearms, said in a statement:
We're extremely thankful for men like Congressman Barry Moore who are willing to go to war for us, stand up for our Second Amendment rights and battle those who continue to take those away from us.
