When we were kids we used to always do scavenger hunts. And it was always a blast: The hunt, the competition, the finding of some hidden, elusive treasure.
Ah, but the operative part of that whole memory is: When we were kids. Because adults, as a rule, generally don't do scavenger hunts.
Unless, uhh...
Yup, apparently New York mayoral races now feature adult scavenger hunts.
From Newsweek:
Hundreds of energized voters snaked around Union Square on Sunday afternoon, as New Yorkers sought one of the limited Zohran Mamdani Scavenger Hunt cards at the first clue stop.
The Democratic mayoral candidate who stunned the city's political establishment by toppling former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for the nomination and has shaken up social media feeds, announced the scavenger hunt in a Saturday video, kicking it off with a jab at incumbent Mayor Eric Adams.
It is entirely true, folks. Mamdani had grownups walking around the Big Apple like they were at a seven-year-old's birthday party in the 90s.
And yes, also like a seven-year-old from the 1990s, Mamdani was seen messily eating a greasy bag of sour-cream-and-onion potato chips in the promo video for the hunt:
The awkward event saw groups of people "huddled over their phones, some frantically Googling hints for the next clue, others pulling up maps and transit apps to plot their route."
Meanwhile, the socialist candidate's gimmicky little political stunt ended up negatively affecting government services:
The bus Newsweek rode to the second clue was so packed with supporters it blew past several stops without taking passengers, drawing some frustration from locals trying to get on with their Sundays.

So what, after all this effort and headache, was the grand prize? Well, local news reports that the winner of the hunt received "a bag of Herr's sour cream and onion chips."

The chip theme of the event was reportedly a nod toward a recent scandal in which one of Mayor Eric Adams's staffers allegedly "[handed] a reporter an empty bag of that same brand of chips with cash inside."
Eric Adams got the last word on this one:
This run around is exactly what he plans to do with your safety, your housing and your taxes. It's all kid's play for Mamdani.
Sounds par for the course for New York!
I'll leave you with more from Mayor Adams:
