Trouble in the House of Mouse: Disney+ lost 700,000 subscribers in Q1 2025

Feb 6, 2025

It turns out that constantly shoveling agenda-driven content down customers' throats isn't a pathway to success. That's a lesson Disney+ learned the hard way in the final months of 2024.

In its Q1 earnings report for fiscal year 2025 (which includes October-December 2024), the streaming giant reported it had lost a troubling 700,000 subscribers from its platform.

According to a report from IndieWire, the decline, though expected, was not good news.

Disney anticipated the Q1 2025 loss of Disney+ subscribers, and now, it is forecasting another 'modest decline' in subs for calendar 2025. It's a far cry from the 4.4 million subscribers Disney+ added from June through September 2024. Blame price hikes and the expiration of certain promotions.

Though the streaming platform, like its parent company, remained profitable, losing hundreds of thousands of subscribers while boasting a content library that includes heavy hitters like Star Wars and Marvel should be cause for concern.

Social media users offered Disney some helpful advice:

Despite the loss of subscribers, there may still be time for Disney to turn things around. It may take something revolutionary and innovative… like making good shows and movies.

On the bright side, Disney+ could always try to find a way to get some USAID funding…

… oh wait.
