Trump is not messing around here.
He made a campaign stop in Smithton, Pennsylvania, to talk to farmers, and while mostly the event saw a tamed Trump, he absolutely went off on John Deere for their laying off of American workers and moving production to Mexico.
Watch:
I just noticed behind me John Deere tractors, I know a lot about John Deere, I love the company. But as you know, they announced a few days ago that they're gonna move a lot of their manufacturing business to Mexico. I'm just notifying John Deere right now. If you do that, we're putting a 200% tariff on everything that you wanna sell into the United States so that if I win, John Deere is gonna be paying 200% …
John Deere, and anybody else that does this … you're going to have a 200% tariff put on the product you make in Mexico right across the border. They think they're going to make product cheaper in Mexico and then sell it in for the same price as they did before — make a lot of money by getting rid of our labor and our jobs.
A man of the people right there!
Keep our jobs in America — this includes incentivising these jobs, Mr. Trump — and stop sending our jobs to Mexico!
Here's the news from back in July that Trump is referring to:
Deere & Co. is laying off nearly 600 workers as the farm equipment manufacturer deals with declining demand.
Deere confirmed Monday that the production positions being cut are concentrated at two factories in Iowa and one at its home base in Moline, Illinois, where 280 employees will be laid off effective Aug. 30. A combined 310 workers will be let go at the Iowa locations.
…
Early in June, Deere announced that it was moving its skid steer and track loader manufacturing from a facility in Dubuque, Iowa to Mexico by the end of 2026. The company said that it was in the process of acquiring land in Ramos, Mexico to build a new factory.
John Deere also went full woke, but reversed course on its "diversity, equity, and inclusion" policies (AKA corporate Marxism) after public backlash.
Many similar American companies like Harley Davidson have reversed course due to similar pressure, but the question of outsourcing remains.
Will American companies care enough about threats from politicians like Trump to actually keep jobs in America?
