First, they told us that exercising was White Supremacy, so I guess it shouldn't be a total shock that we ended up here.
BMI, Body Mass Index, is a measurement that uses height and weight to determine obesity and the slew of health issues that come with being overweight. It's not a perfect tool, since it doesn't consider personal genetics, muscle mass, or other individual factors, but it is a good baseline (especially combined with waist size) for general health.
Apparently, we're now throwing all that out the window – not because there are better tools, but because it was invented by [whispers] white people.
And this isn't some Salon article arguing it. It's the American Medical Association.
The American Medical Association, the largest organization of doctors in the US, said the metric has been used for ‘racist exclusion' and fails to consider differences in body composition that vary based on race and sex...
The woke want you fat and angry.
The AMA Council on Science and Public Health said: ‘Our AMA recognizes: the issues with using body mass index (BMI) as a measurement because: (a) of the eugenics behind the history of BMI, (b) of the use of BMI for racist exclusion, and (c) BMI cutoffs are based on the imagined ideal Caucasian and does not consider a person's gender or ethnicity.'
You know, they could have just called it outdated and recommended another tool. But they didn't.
The AMA has to let you know that the reason for the change is that the people who invented it were evil and racist and wanted black people, especially black women, to suffer for centuries to come.
I should note that while the AMA says BMI has caused "historical harm," they currently support castrating kids as a form of mental health treatment.
The ways in which physicians discuss BMI and obesity have changed drastically over the past decade alone. It was not until 2013 that the AMA officially recognized obesity as a disease, a move that ushered in the advent of medications to treat it including the ‘miracle' fat-loss injections including Mounjaro and Wegovy.
The AMA is the largest association of doctors in the country, and its guidelines have a major bearing on the ways in which medicine is practiced in the US.
They're dropping BMI because they want to change the conversation around weight and start prescribing medicine for weight loss instead of encouraging a healthy diet and exercise. Telling people to be accountable and responsible is so last century, after all. Now there's a pill for that!
