Sadly, this is not satire.

The absolute state of things.

Iryna Zarutska suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the East/West Boulevard light rail station in South End, Charlotte just before 10 p.m. Friday, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said Saturday.

Zarutska had 'recently arrived in the United States, seeking safety from the war and hoping for a new beginning,' according to a GoFundMe page set up to fundraise for the young woman's aunt and other family members during the 'heartbreaking time.'

More from a family friend:

The suspect is 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr., who has a lengthy rap sheet.

Brown has been arrested a slew of times since 2011 for felony larceny, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and communicating threats, according to court records obtained by The Post.

He is homeless and served five years in prison for the robbery with a deadly weapon charge, according to WSOC-TV.

Why was this man out on the streets, you may ask?

Brown has had other charges dropped, but currently has active charges pending for misusing the 911 system in January 2025. When officers visited him at that time, he revealed just how insane he actually is.

From The Charlotte Observer:

Police conducted a welfare check on Brown, who told them he believed a person gave him a 'man-made' material that controlled when he did things like eat, walk and talk, an affidavit said. 'Brown wanted officers to investigate this "man-made" material that was inside of his body,' the affidavit said.

'Officers advised Brown that the issue was medical issue and that there was nothing further they could do.' The affidavit said Brown became upset with officers, called 911 to speak with police, and was arrested after hanging up.

After Iryna's murder, local city councilors called for action to make the public transit system safer. Their suggestion?

Raise taxes for more infrastructure projects!

They noted Mecklenburg voters will decide the fate of a referendum to raise the county's sales tax to pay for road, rail and bus projects this November.

Alternatively, cities could keep criminals locked up in jail and reopen the asylums.
