University of Florida Anthropology Department holds virtual town hall open to all students who are not white and I have thoughts

The University of Florida recently held an event which only invited students who weren't white.

We can beat around the bush all day if we want and choose to call the group BIPOC—which means black, indigenous, and people of color—but that would be foolish.

Really what they mean is "NOT WHITE PEOPLE."

Organizer Isis Dwyer, a PhD student, posted an advertisement for the online event on Twitter, which was retweeted by Florida's Anthropology department:

Tomorrow is the BIPOC @AnthropologyUF Town Hall! All UF graduate and undergraduate (majors and minors) BIPOC students are welcome. Join us as we discuss our needs as BIPOC students and future directions as a group! General Body meetings will begin Spring 2021.

Luckily for conservative UF students the Young America's Foundation features a Campus Bias Tipline on their website.

In the email obtained by YAF the Anthropology department asks "white students to respect that this is a space where BIPOC students can come together without the need to perform any emotional or mental labor to explain their experiences as BIPOC."

The irony here is astounding!

Here's Merriam Webster's definition of Anthropology:

The science of human beings and especially of their physical characteristics, their origin and the distribution of races, their environment and social relations, and their culture.

So it's pretty obvious to me that the University of Florida Anthropology department has their subject backwards. The least they could do is put the white students on mute and let them listen to other humans speak about their struggles. In fact, that's exactly what they're there to study.

The Young America's Foundation continues to do great things. And less than 24 hours after YAF put the University of Florida on blast the university released this statement:

Nice work YAF!

I must say this: we need to be careful that we don't slip back into a world where segregation is considered normal. Racism certainly exists in this country. The way to solve this problem is not by plugging the ears of white students to the struggles of people of color.
