Four people have been charged and police may be on the lookout for one more suspect after former New York Governor David Paterson and his 20-year-old stepson were attacked near their Manhattan home on Friday night.
It all began when Paterson and his stepson, Anthony Chester Sliwa, got into an argument with a group of teens who were climbing a fire escape to a building on the Upper East Side. This is a technique commonly used to break into buildings and rob and/or vandalize them.
When 45 minutes later Paterson and his stepson encountered the teens again, they had more people with them, including two adults ... and then this happened.
[Warning: Violence]
Mess with the bull, get the horns. And by that, I mean if you tell a bunch of NYC hoodlums to stop breaking into buildings they're going to break you.
Paterson, New York's first and only black governor, is legally blind, which makes this all the worse. He and his stepson were taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. Paterson reports that his stepson needed five stitches in his lip as a result of the beating.
Four of the suspects have been arrested, and we're not sure if a fifth is still being pursued.
The two suspects, 40-year-old Travor Nurse and 34-year-old Diamond Minter, were both charged Monday with gang assault, according to police. Nurse also faces a charge of second-degree assault if a victim over 65 years old. Attorney information for Nurse and Minter, both of whom are NYCHA employees, was not immediately clear.
Those arrests came two days after two boys, age 12 and 13, had been arrested for the attack on Paterson and his 20-year-old stepson on the Upper East Side Friday night.
A preteen and a 13-year-old. These gangs have 12- and 13-year-olds doing their dirty work. And both of the adults who were arrested work for the New York City Housing Authority!
Remember, New York has a brand!
